Connecticut Poison Control Center Warns Against Pain Pill Abuse

It is easy to be addicted to painkillers. Most of the people who got hook with prescription drugs started after taking them for alleviating actual pain caused by injury or surgery. People tend to continue taking the pills even they have fully recovered from their condition.

According to statistics from the National Institutes of Health, at least 20 percent of people in the United States used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. It is still unclear why people abuse these drugs and why the number is increasing each year.

Experts pointed out that availability of the drugs is one of the main reasons why there are abused. At present, more doctors prescribe drugs for health problems. Drug poisoning has been the leading cause of accidental death in the state of Connecticut. It has claimed more lives than vehicular accidents. The most commonly abused prescription drugs are pain pills such as Vicodin, Percocet, and OxyContin.

To commemorate the National Poison Prevention Week, experts from the Connecticut Poison Control Center would pay more attention to this growing health problem. One of the reasons for the increase number of prescription drug abuse is the misconception about safety of the drugs. People think they are safe to use because they are prescribe by doctors.
